The hosting rights were initially awarded in 2024, with the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) presenting its preparedness case before the CAA council in Accra, Ghana, on May 11.
BAA acting president Oabona Theetso said the association delivered a convincing presentation that reassured the council of Botswana’s readiness to stage the continental showpiece.
“We are happy that CAA found it fit to allow Botswana to host the championships back in 2024. As Botswana, it will be our first time to host the African Senior Championship; therefore, we are not going to drop the ball,” Theetso said.
The last time the championships were staged in southern Africa was in 2016 in Durban, South Africa.
Theetso noted that Botswana would build on the blueprint established during the successful hosting of the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26, which earned praise across the athletics world.
“A lot of lessons will be drawn from what we have just witnessed in terms of hosting such a successful international competition,” he said.
He further explained that 2028 would be a demanding year on the athletics calendar, with the World Relays in the Bahamas set to serve as qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
According to Theetso, the African Senior Athletics Championships would also act as a qualifying platform for both the World Relays and the Olympics, although dates for the competition are yet to be confirmed.
Botswana is also planning to use the country’s celebrated men’s 4x400m relay team as ambassadors for the championships as part of efforts to market the event and promote the nation globally.
“It is not just about hosting, but also about promoting our country through sport and showcasing our rich culture and heritage,” he added.
Theetso revealed that plans are already underway to establish a Local Organising Committee before the end of the year to ensure preparations begin early.
Following the widely praised staging of the World Athletics Relays, he admitted expectations would now be significantly higher.
“The world will be watching to see whether it was just a fluke; it is important that we maintain the standard,” he said.
He added that the athletics association would work closely with the government and corporate sector to define partnerships and responsibilities needed to deliver a successful championship.
Mauritius will host the 2030 edition of the event, with Algeria set to host the 2027 African U18 and U20 Championships.
