Budapest23: Star girl, Kipyegon, delivers historic double with 5000m victory

She has delivered the country's second gold in Budapest, having won the first in 1500m.

Well, we are not sure which title to use to describe her, but golden Faith Kipyegon has delivered a historic double for Kenya, winning the women’s 5000m in 14:53.88. 

She was up against a loaded field that had the defending champion, World Cross country champion, Olympic champion but she is a gift that keeps on giving and she delivered. 

Wity the win, she becomes only the second Kenyan woman to win a world championships double after Vivian Cheruiyot and the only woman in history to win a 1500m and 5000m World Championships double. 

Kipyegon, already a three world records holder in 1500m, 5000m and the mile, a feat she achieved within a week for the first two and less than two months later for the mile headed to Budapest ready make more history.

In Saturday’s 5000m final, she outkicked Dutch rival Sifan Hassan, the Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion to finish ahead, albeit in a close finish. Beatrice Chebet settled for bronze.

She had won the 1500m title four days ago to become the first woman to earn a third 1500m gold.
