Tirop's Angels, an organisation founded in the wake of the brutal murder of 10km world record holder Agnes Tirop, is set to hold its first race on 5 December.
The race is aimed at creating awareness and taking the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to the community by educating them, lobbying and helping hold accountable those who perpetrate crimes and injustices against the vulnerable, especially women and children.
In honour of the slain Olympian, the 10km races headline the event with a masters 5km race open to runners aged 45 and above also been included.
Registration for the event opens on 29 November at the Iten Sports Office.
According to the organisers, the winners of the 10km race stand to win Ksh 60,000 with second and third place walking home with Ksh 45,000 and 30,000 respectively.
The 5km race will see winners awarded Ksh 25,000 with second and third place finishers winning Ksh 20,000 and Ksh 15,000 respectively.
The 10km races will gun off at Boundary and conclude at Iten grounds while the 5km race will begin at Salaba Academy with the finish line set at Iten grounds too.
“On top of the race , we have support from the county and national government, shoe companies as well as other stakeholders and are embarking on a school program that will teach young runners how to deal with conflicts in relationships. We are also educating women on their rights while educating the society on some cultural practices that normalize violence,” marathoner Joan Chelimo who has been at the forefront of the call to end GBV had revealed in an earlier interview, further stating that their scope is not limited to women but men who are in similar situations too.
