Over 400 athletes are expected to converge at Nyayo for the two-day event

Fresh from military training and having not competed since early last year, fast rising sprint sensation Zablon Ekwam says he will be taking it easy on the track in the initial meetings.

The youngster will be in action in the first Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field meet of the year set for Friday 4 and Saturday 5 February at Nyayo National Stadium, opening up a busy season for Kenyan athletes.

"I have been in training for the last month or so, focusing mostly on loading to get my body back to its form before I left for military training. I have not done intensive speed works and so I will not be expecting to perform as I did in last year's meets. I am just looking to get back to competition mode then gradually work on my form and speed." offered Ekwam.

Although still early days, Ekwam who missed a chance to compete in last year's World Relays has his sights set on making team Kenya to the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

"It will take a lot of work to get to that form I was in when I ran the fastest 400m last year nationally. I missed alot of opportunities to compete internationally but now I am back and my dream is to be in Oregon. For a start, I am considering running in the 200m at the initial AK meets as that will help me work on my speed then gradually ease into my race," he added.

AK's Youth Committee chairman Barnaba Korir confirmed that over 400 athletes are expected to compete in different disciplines in the two-day event, further urging those eyeing the international events to make use of the meets to horn their skills.
