Kenya's 4x400m men’s relay team shattered two African records Sunday night as the curtains came down on the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
On their way to making an appearance in the finals at Commonwealth Arena, the team of Wiseman Were, Zablon Ekwam, Kelvin Tauta and Boniface Mweresa first timed 3:06.96 to break the continent’s record set by Nigeria in 2014 (3:07.95) in Heat 1, before dipping further to clock 3:06.71 in a decent fourth placed finish in the finals.
Mweresa, on the anchor leg, posted the fastest split-time for Kenya, timing 45.79, with Ekwam following with a second leg time of 46.55.
Leading the front at the end was Alexander Doom, who secured Belgium - with a world lead time of 3:02.54 - gold ahead of USA (who had sprinter Noah Lyles feature), while Netherlands came in third in a national record time of 3:04.25.
In other results, Kenya’s other representatives on Sunday however failed to replicate such high standards set, as they all failed to secure spots on the podium.
After a blistering run in the men’s 1500m heats, 2021 World U20 champion Vincent Keter once led then faded away in the finals, finishing only tenth while clocking 3:40.04.
In the women’s 800m final, Kenya’s sole runner Vivian Chebet came home fourth in a 2:03.76 performance that saw Ethiopian Africa U20 silver medalist outpace race favorite Jemma Reekie to win gold clocking 2:01.90.
Kenya’s only medal came on Saturday, as world record holder in the 3000m steeplechase Beatrice Chepkoech scooped bronze in the 3000m flat, clocking a new national record time of 8:22.68.
On Friday night, Commonwealth Games champion Ferdinand Omanyala finished fourth in the men’s 60m final after clocking 6.56 behind race winner Christian Coleman, Lyles and Ackeem Blake.
