The late Kelvin Kiptum and double world record holder Faith Kipyegon were on Friday night named sportsman and woman of the year respectively, at the 20th edition of Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Gala held at KICC.
Kiptum was honored posthumously after he tragically passed away in a road accident on February 11 and was laid to rest last week.
The recognition follows an impressive year during which Kiptum broke the Chicago Marathon record running 2:00:35.
Kipyegon bagged the Sportswoman of the Year award for the third time following a remarkable 2023 where she became the first woman ever to complete a 1,500-5,000 meters double at the World Championship.
Kipyegon's two golds from Budapest capped an impressive season in which she broke three world records - in the 1,500m, mile, and 5,000m.
The Olympic gold medalist, via a video, expressed delight in winning the award, “I am so greatly honored to be awarded for the third time. To all athletes, I want to wish you a great year. Asante for this trophy. "
