"My participation goes beyond competition; I want to empower young people"
Legendary Kenyan marathoner Abel Kirui is gearing up for the 19th edition of the Kigali International Peace Marathon set for June 9, 2024, after failing to feature in Team Kenya’s marathon squad for the Paris Olympics.
The two-time world champion (2009 and 2011) and 2016 Chicago Marathon champion is aiming to add another feather to his already decorated cabinet.
He will be heading to Kigali keen to improve on his eighth-place finish at the Fukuoka Marathon in December 2023 where he completed the race in 2:08:36.
According to Kirui, he has worked on his weak areas and is confident in his abilities ahead of the marathon.
"I am in peak condition and determined to perform well in Kigali and claim the top spot," he offered.
The 2012 Olympic silver medalist has not secured a victory in a while, but his rigorous training suggests he'll be a strong contender for the podium.
"It is been a while since I crossed the finish line first but with my current preparation, I am positive I'll be back on the podium this time," he admitted.
Beyond personal glory, Kirui, who is a seasoned marathoner with 19 years of experience, also hopes to inspire young athletes.
"I hold the record for the longest-serving Kenyan marathoner. My participation goes beyond competition; I want to empower young people, showing them that a long and successful career in running is achievable," he disclosed.
While missing out on representing Kenya at the Paris Olympics was a setback, Kirui remains optimistic that he will shine in future races. He admitted that missing the Olympics was equal to missing a long-term dream.
"Competing at the Olympics was a dream. Though I wasn't selected, I'll turn my attention to other events. My marathon journey is far from over. The Olympics are a prestigious opportunity for any athlete. To those representing Kenya, strive for gold – that's the ultimate goal. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance," he said.
Kenya's dominance in the Kigali race is a tradition. Last year, Kenyans swept the top 11 positions, with George Onyancha taking the top honor (2:17:41). This year, Kirui hopes to continue that winning streak.
