The Kaptagat-based athlete, better known for her dominance in the 1,500m, proved once again that she is equally formidable over the longer distance after clocking 14:05.20 in a thrilling photo finish to secure victory in the star-studded race.

Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw came in second in a personal best of 14:30:54 while her country-mate Getachew Senayet completed the podium in a personal best of 14:24:71.

Another Kenyan, Caroline Nyaga, finished ninth, while Maurine Chebor finished eleventh.

Heading into the race, Kipyegon was among the athletes to watch as the 2026 Diamond League season got underway, and she lived up to the billing in emphatic fashion.

The four-time world champion controlled the race brilliantly before unleashing her trademark finishing kick in the closing stages to edge out a competitive field.

Kipyegon’s latest triumph adds another chapter to her remarkable journey in the 5,000m. She made her debut over the distance in 2015 at the Paris Meeting, where she finished seventh in 14:44.51.

In June that year, she announced herself as a serious contender in the event after storming to victory at the Paris Diamond League with a scintillating 14:05.20 performance that obliterated the then world record.

Two months later, the Kenyan produced another memorable display at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, clinching gold in 14:53.88 ahead of Dutch star Sifan Hassan, who timed 14:54.11, and Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, who clocked 14:54.33.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Kipyegon added an Olympic silver medal to her glittering collection after crossing the line in 14:29.60 behind Chebet, who won gold in 14:28.56, while Hassan settled for bronze in 14:30.61.

She also claimed another silver medal at last year’s World Championships in Tokyo after timing 14:55.07, once again finishing behind Chebet, who won in 14:54.36.

The 31-year-old had already hinted at strong form ahead of the track season after storming to victory in a 10km road race in Monaco, where she clocked an impressive 29:47.
