The event will come days after the 36-year-old threw a season-best 82.95m to win the Motonet GP Games in Lahti
2016 Olympic Games javelin silver medalist Julius Yego will seek to continue his steady progress this season as he lines up in his second European tour event next week.
Yego, 36, is among the headline names who will be taking part in this year’s Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland on Tuesday 17 June.
The javelin star will notably take on 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott and Poland’s Marcin Krukowski in the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting with his eyes fixed on improving his throws this year, and potentially earning himself another trip at the World Championships.
The event in Turku will come days after Yego threw a season-best 82.95m to win the Motonet GP Games in Lahti, Finland on Wednesday 11 June.
The 2015 World Champion, who showed improved form, finished ahead of the aforementioned Walcott, who came second with a throw of 79.98.
The mark for Yego showcased his steady improvement this season, after throws of 78.52 and 78.74 at the Doha Diamond League and a home Kip Keino Classic tour last month.
“First European Tour and a win with a season best throw,” Yego reacted to his win in Lahti. “My rhythm is better, and I can see some improvement from the last competition. Onto the next competition as I gear up for the main event in September. Patience and practice are key.”
The qualifying mark for Tokyo stands at 85.50m, and should the ‘Youtube Man’ keep up his process, then that could be achieved in three days' time.
Elsewhere in other events on the day, Kenya’s Brian Komen will come up against 2023 world bronze medalist Narve Gilje Nordas, South Africa’s Tshepo Tshite and Spanish 800m specialist Adrian Ben in the men’s 1500m, as Wilberforce Kones and Wesley Langat duel in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
