Shabana are seeking cover following a niggly injury to captain George Onyango while AFC Leopards have been forced to use midfielder Kayci Odhiambo at left centre-back

Mara Sugar FC defender Robinson Musungu has quickly become one of the most talked-about centre-backs in the FKF Premier League, with interest intensifying just six months into his top-flight career.

The young centre-back has emerged as a concrete transfer target for AFC Leopards, Tusker FC, Shabana FC and Kenya Police FC, following a string of composed and influential performances at the heart of defence.

Musungu joined Mara Sugar FC in September 2025 from National Super League (NSL) side Vihiga United, where he had spent two seasons refining his game.

While the move was initially viewed as a developmental step, his adaptation to FKF Premier League football has been immediate.

He has shown maturity beyond his experience, settling seamlessly into Mara Sugar’s defensive structure and quickly becoming a first-choice option.

His breakthrough moment came in a recent league encounter against APS Bomet, where he delivered a commanding display, capped by a crucial goal in a 1–1 draw that earned him the Man of the Match award.

That performance summed up his early-season impact: Musungu has already scored twice, while consistently ranking highly for defensive actions such as ball recoveries, interceptions, tackles and aerial duels.

Beyond the raw defensive metrics, Musungu’s profile stands out because of his comfort in possession.

Noting that he is also a very good set-piece taker.

He demonstrates a wide passing range, capable of switching play with accurate long balls or progressing attacks through crisp, line-breaking passes.

His ball striking, composure under pressure and ability to retain possession have added a valuable build-up dimension to Mara Sugar’s game, making him more than just a traditional stopper.

The growing list of suitors reflects structural issues across the league. Kenya Police have recently deployed Abud Omar, a natural left-back, as an emergency left centre-back.

Tusker have shifted right-footed Charles Momanyi into the left side of defence, while Shabana are seeking cover following a long-term injury to captain George 'Dizzo' Onyango.

AFC Leopards, meanwhile, have been forced to use midfielder Kayci Odhiambo at left centre-back.

In that context, Musungu’s left-sided balance, calmness and reliability make him an attractive solution.

With interest mounting, Mara Sugar appear to be preparing for life without their standout defender.

The club has moved proactively in the January window, signing Nassor Shikokoti from Nzoia Sugar and Lameck Luhangala from KCB FC as potential replacements.

Whether Musungu departs now or later, his rapid rise underlines a defender whose trajectory is firmly pointing upward - and whose next move could significantly shape the league’s defensive landscape
