Alagić bemoans fixture congestion in league resumption

Teams are set to play a maximum of three games a week to complete the season in time.

Nairobi City Stars head coach Sanjin Alagić has welcomed the imminent resumption of sports in the country but has lamented over the congestion of fixtures as Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) aim to finish the season before September.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa previously revealed that teams might be forced to play three matches a week in order to finish the season in line with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) calendar.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Sanjin noted that a jammed fixture schedule is bound to have adverse effects on teams as the league resumes on Friday 12 May.

"Three matches a week is a challenge even when your team is fully prepared. At this moment we are not on that level of fitness, not even close. So it will be hard to keep focus and concentration to play good games in continuity and also avoid injuries.

"Unfortunately the league stopped at the wrong time for us because we were in good shape, playing good football and winning games. Anyway I believe we will be ready for challenges and I hope we'll make even better results," said Sanjin.

City Stars face a daunting task when the league resumes as they face reigning league champions Gor Mahia on Sunday 16 May at the Kasarani Stadium.

The Bosnian gaffer could however not hide his delight after President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Sports and Health Ministries to draft guidelines for the resumption of sporting activities in the country but asked for more time to enable adequate team preparations.

"I'm very happy and excited that President Uhuru opened the country and allowed the resumption of sports. Definitely, we missed training and matches, I also believe all fans who love and enjoy football missed it.

"After one month break, of course, you need more time to prepare team, there is a difference in individual training and team training, but I must be honest and say that I understand why we get such a short time to prepare because it will be impossible to finish league and Cup if FKF didn't make this decision," added Sanjin.
