Versatile defender from Lecce arrived on a five-year deal
Manchester United fans were thrilled in early November at the prospect of one of Europe’s most promising managers taking charge of their club. However, Ruben Amorim’s first two and a half months have been far from spectacular. Many have defended the Portuguese coach by pointing out that he didn’t assemble the current squad.

As January draws to a close, United has yet to officially announce any transfers—but that changed today. After prolonged negotiations, Lecce has finally softened its stance on the sale of Patrick Dorgu. Initially reluctant to accept a 30 million euros offer, the Serie A side was persuaded after United added 7.5 million in potential bonuses and he signed a deal until 2030, with an option for another season.
“I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player; this is a very special day for my whole family. I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim; his vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions” said Patrick Dorgu after signing.
Born in Copenhagen, Dorgu came through the academy at FC Nordsjælland before being spotted by Lecce, who signed him in June 2022. Initially joining their youth ranks, he was promoted to the first team after just one season. Remarkably, Lecce acquired him from Denmark for a mere 200,000—now set to sell him for 37.5 million, marking a massive profit. The 20-year-old left-back has already made his senior debut for Denmark, playing four matches in the UEFA Nations League, including a 2-0 win over Serbia in Copenhagen, where he also scored his first international goal.
United’s interest in Dorgu further highlights Nordsjælland’s reputation as an elite talent factory. The Danish club has produced some exceptional players in recent years, including: Stanislav Lobotka, Mohammed Kudus, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Emre Mor and Ibrahim Osman. Dorgu’s arrival will mark United’s first major signing under Amorim, and while the squad overhaul is still in its early stages, this move signals the club’s intent to invest in young, high-potential talents.
