Maniema handed Naibois their second defeat in the group stage courtesy of a 66th-minute strike from Mboma Kinda.
With the win, Maniema are now second in Group B with six points, the same as Moroccan club Wydad AC, while Azam FC and Naibois are yet to earn a point in the group.
Speaking after the match, Maniema head coach Papy opened up on how he managed to secure the vital victory.
“We had some opportunities in the first half that we did not score. In the second half, we had one of our best players (Kinda) on the bench, and we brought him in. I am glad he was able to win the game for us.
After that, we knew they would resort to long balls, and we were comfortable with that because of the height advantage,” said Papy.
In the first half, Maniema were guilty of squandering numerous goal-scoring opportunities; they not only scored in the second half, but also dominated the half as compared to the opening stanza when Naibois were in control.
Maniema custodian Detan Ogundane revealed Papy’s halftime team talk that saw them have an improved second half.
“We played according to the coach's instructions, and so it was not difficult for us to win. We lost a couple of chances in the first half, and then in the second half, the coach told us not to be patient in the build-up and in the final third, which eventually paid off,” stated Ogundane.
Maniema now have their eyes set on quarter-final qualification even as they prepare to face group leaders Wydad in a highly anticipated clash set for Sunday, 25 January 2026.
“We are looking forward to getting to the latter stages of the tournament, but we will wait and plan on Wydad in January,” he added.
