Black Cats without luck: United survive at Stadium of Light

Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 09.05.26. | 19:03

Even though Sunderland deserved to win at least by a two-goal margin, the lucky Red Devils salvaged a goalless draw

The popular belief claims that an encounter with a black cat brings bad luck. However, Manchester United had a completely opposite experience today. In fact, the Black Cats from the Stadium of Light were a jinx for themselves, as they wasted a number of opportunities and missed a fantastic chance to bring the uninspired Red Devils to their knees - 0-0.

The opening 10 minutes indicated what kind of match people in Sunderland were going to watch, as the home team wasted three excellent chances through Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, and Bryan Brobbey, who allowed the visitors' keeper Senne Lammens to become a hero early in the game.

In the remaining part of the first half, United established partial control and awaited the break without a deficit.

After the break, the game continued in the same rhythm before another Sunderland’s surge began. In the 63rd minute, Lammens made another point-blank stop after Brobbey's shot, while Lutsharel Geertruida hit the post eight minutes later.

Concerning the Red Devils, Joshua Zirkzee's header over the bar, Amad Diallo's strike from the right side, and Matheus Cunha's effort in the dying minutes were the only so-so chances they made in the entire game.

Given that Michael Carrick's men had already booked their place in the Champions League, they looked pretty unmotivated and relaxed and deserved to lose at least by a two-goal margin, but luck was on their side.

As for the Black Cats, all these wasted opportunities may return to haunt them if they fail to qualify for any of the European competitions. In these decisive Premier League games, every point matters.
