The two teams meet in the opening Group G match. This is their first ever meeting at any stage
Five time African champions, Cameroon will on Thursday afternoon take on Switzerland in their opening World Cup Group G match at the Al Janoub Stadium, in Al Wakrah.
The Swiss qualified for the tournament after topping the group that had European Champions, Italy while Cameroon defeated Algeria in the playoff. A Karl Toko-Ekambi extra time goal sealed the Indomitable Lions' qualification.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two outfits and it is a game that both will be out to pick maximum points from. Serbia and record champions, Brazil are the other group G teams.
In a group that's likey to be won by Brazil, the other three teams will be keen on getting points against each other and the match between Cameroon and Switzerland is a 'must win' for both teams and expectedly, it will be a closely fought one.
Both teams’ best finish at the tournament is a quarter final stage reach. Cameroon achieved it in 1990 while the Swiss had their best place finish in 1954, in the last two editions, they reached the round of 16 stage.
Arsenal midfielder, Granit Xhaka, Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, Fabian Schar of Manchester City, Chelsea's Dennis Zakaria and Monaco's Breel Embolo will be the key players for the European side. Captain Vincent Aboubakar, Andre Onana, Toko Ekambi, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Bryan Mbeumo, and Zambo Anguissa will be crucial for Cameroon against the European side.
