Chelsea tear down West Ham's fort to hold the fourth
Reading Time: 3min | Sat. 24.04.21. | 21:26
Werner scored the only goal but could have had at least three to his name
With two London teams occupying 4th and 5th spot, the match represented a proper derby. Chelsea were looking for a double against the Hammers and they got it - after a win in the first part of the season at Stamford Bridge, final score at London Stadium - 0-1.
Chelsea were dominating possession in the early stages. In the 4th minute Mount picked out Werner, who has pulled out onto the penalty spot. The German swept the ball goalwards, but the ball went over Fabianski's crossbar.
Mount was in the mood from the get-go. He brilliantly turned away from Souceck inside the West Ham penalty area in the 10th minute. He managed to try with a low shot but Fabianski dived to his right to make a smart save.
Six minutes later, Werner found Pulisic on the penalty area, but the American's shot lacked power and accuracy so the Polish goalkeeper made a comfortable save.
After Werner missed a chance in the 31st minute, West Ham got a grip on the ball. Second part of the first half belonged to the hosts.
But just as referee Chris Kavanagh did the calculations to announce the stoppage time, Chelsea broke through.
Werner started the play - and ended it. After a couple of precise passed on the counter attack, Ben Chilwell found the German on the edge of the goal box and it was easy for Werner to change the score.
Even though this was the first Premier League goal since mid-February for the German, Werner has been directly involved in 20 goals for Chelsea this season (11 goals, 9 assists), the most of any player for the club in all competitions.
Werner could have scored his second soon after however he made a laughable shot in the 51st minute. Mount took a shot from about 25 yards from goal but Fabianski made a superb save. Werner caught the rebound, had plenty of the goal to aim at, but he rolled the ball wide of the far post.
West Ham tried taking over again - attempts from Fornals and Lingard reminded Tuchel his team is playing against a great side. So soon after Chelsea responded with great shots from Mount, Werner and Azpilicueta.
In the 81st minute West Ham lost Fabian Balbuena due to a red card - his foul on Chilwell looked like there was no intent, however it was a clumsy action from the Paraguayan and it could have caused serious injury.
Final minutes of the game passed in substitutions and Chelsea attempts. Thomas Tuchel made history as the first Chelsea manager who did not lose any of his first 10 games in charge in away games (W8, D2) in all competitions.
Huge three points for the Stamford Bridge side as they separate themselves from West Ham - Hammers stay on 55 while Chelsea have 58 points.
