As Argentina continues its quest for another world title, photos emerged of a group of fans proudly carrying a Kenyan jersey alongside the famous sky-blue and white Argentine flags.

Curious Kenyans would soon learn that the supporters were members of Kenia de mi Vida, a Buenos Aires-based five-a-side futsal team that has built its entire identity around Kenya.

The team has since won admiration online for embracing Kenyan colours, culture, and values despite being located more than 11,000 kilometres away in South America.

Why is the team called Kenia de mi Vida?

The story behind the club's name is rooted in Argentina's passionate football culture.

The phrase "de mi vida", which translates to "of my life," is one of the highest expressions of affection among Argentine football supporters. It is commonly heard in chants echoing around packed stadiums whenever fans profess their undying love for their clubs.

When the group of friends came together to register for a local amateur five-a-side league in Buenos Aires, they wanted a name that would be different from the usual Boca Juniors, River Plate or Real Madrid-inspired teams.

Inspired by Kenya's global reputation for producing world-class long-distance runners and the values of resilience, discipline, and hard work, they settled on Kenia de mi Vida as a tribute to the East African nation.

Kenyan colours and the Maasai shield

The club's admiration for Kenya is impossible to miss.

While many amateur teams opt for simple kits, Kenia de mi Vida wears jerseys inspired by the Kenyan flag.

The shirts feature black across the shoulders and sleeves, green panels running down the sides, and a bold red stripe through the centre, separated by white lines.

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is the badge emblazoned across the chest.

Instead of a conventional club crest or sponsor logo, the players proudly wear the iconic Maasai shield flanked by crossed spears.

One of the team's midfielders explained that the emblem represents much more than aesthetics.

"Other teams try to scare you with dark jerseys or aggressive names. But when we wear this shield, it changes how we feel. It stands for defense, unity, and a warrior spirit. It reminds us to keep running and never give up,” he said.

Playing with Kenya's endurance

The Kenyan influence also shapes the team's style of play.

Five-a-side football in Argentina is played at a frantic pace on compact synthetic pitches enclosed by chain-link fences, where losing concentration for even a few seconds can lead to conceding a goal.

Inspired by Kenya's legendary endurance athletes, the team has developed a high-energy approach built around relentless pressing, constant movement, and lightning-fast counter-attacks.

Their ability to keep running until the final whistle has made them one of the most entertaining and popular sides in their local league.

More than just football

Beyond the matches, Kenia de mi Vida has also become known for its community spirit.

After every game, players, opponents, family members, and supporters gather for Argentina's traditional asado barbecue, sharing food, drinks, and stories regardless of the result.

Their sportsmanship has earned them respect throughout the local football community, with many rivals looking forward to facing "The Kenyans" as much for the post-match camaraderie as the action on the pitch.

Their admiration for Kenya was also on full display during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when the team travelled to support Argentina while proudly carrying a Kenyan jersey alongside Argentine flags, a gesture that introduced many Kenyans to the unique club.

The relationship between the team and Kenya could soon become even stronger.

The players have publicly shared plans to travel to Kenya during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host.
