Talanta Stadium is a flagship project by Kenya to build an ultramodern facility that will serve as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) epicentre in Kenya.

The facility, which will, by and large, improve sports in the country by having a modern infrastructure, became even more needful after Kenya, alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania, won the rights to host the continental tourney in 2027 in a joint bid dubbed PAMOJA (Swahili word for together).

Having won the bid, Kenya began the construction of the 60,0000-seater facility in March 2024 after a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by President William Ruto.

The contract was then handed to the renowned China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), who have been working day and night to deliver the project successfully, just like they have done in their previous projects such as the Nairobi-Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Nairobi Expressway.

According to Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, who led a delegation that included his Defense counterpart Soipan Tuya on a tour of the facility, shared photos and reported that the works are 85% complete.

From the photos, the curtain wall of the facility is now complete, with all steel works done, bringing to fruition the outward facade of the facility as was expected from the visual impressions.

Additionally, the Kenyan shields that depict the culture and beautify the facility are complete across all sides of the facade.

With the completion of the computerised hydraulic tension system that holds the roofing structure, as well as the successful installation of the roof, works are now centred on the installation of the canopy across the stadium.

The canopy has already been installed in a section of the stadium and is made from Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) - a lightweight membrane system used in modern stadiums that offers shade to protect fans while also allowing light to enter the stadium.

Apart from the roofing, the construction and installation of the playing field is also continuing in earnest, with the levelling and drainage work already done.

The pitch is expected to be ready by Saturday, 28 February, although it might not be approved for use to allow for the full maturity of the grass.
