The case of PSG's goalkeeper reminds us so much of the saga with their former striker

After a historic season in Paris - albeit one that fell short of a Club World Cup triumph - Gianluigi Donnarumma now finds himself in the final year of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The Italian goalkeeper, who played a key role in the club’s domestic clean sweep, could be on the verge of a surprise exit, sparking tension behind the scenes at the Parc des Princes.

PSG now faces the real possibility of losing one of the best goalkeepers in world football on a free transfer.

From the current standpoint, Donnarumma’s situation is starting to echo that of Kylian Mbappe - a saga that ended with the French star walking away for free and joining Real Madrid, having struck a deal with the Spanish giants six months before his contract expired.

Negotiations between Donnarumma and the club have dragged on for over a year, without any meaningful progress. His agent, Enzo Raiola, recently confirmed publicly that there is no urgency on their end, although the keeper’s top priority remains staying in Paris. That said, the door is not closed on alternative destinations.

Reports in France indicate that Bayern Munich is closely monitoring the situation as it prepares for a future beyond 36-year-old Yann Sommer. Manchester City and Juventus are also said to be interested, though the Premier League champions are believed to be nearing an agreement to re-sign academy product James Trafford from Burnley.

A return to Italy could be the most realistic option for Donnarumma - not out of necessity, but personal preference. PSG is therefore preparing to step up efforts in talks with his representatives, hoping to reach a renewal that would put to rest any speculation about his departure.

Still, for many within the club, the situation evokes a sense of deja vu. Mbappe isn't the only high-profile exit PSG has endured. Adrien Rabiot also chose not to extend his deal, ultimately moving to Juventus. Like Mbappe, Rabiot barely featured in his final season once he declined to renew.

While all parties remain hopeful of reaching an agreement, Donnarumma holds the leverage, with the potential to negotiate a significantly improved deal - one that would surpass his current €13 million salary. It’s worth remembering he arrived in Paris as a free agent from AC Milan.

Should negotiations ultimately collapse, PSG is reportedly eyeing Lille's Lucas Chevalier as a possible replacement.
