Leopards central defender goes under the knife to repair his damaged ACL

AFC Leopards will be forced to do without the services of their central defender Tedian Esilaba for the next nine months.

The towering defender tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL) during their 2-1 win over Kakamega Homeboyz and subsequently went under the knife on Thursday evening to repair the damage.

The February acquisition from Nairobi City Stars had a debut to forget after picking what appeared to be a slight knock injury against Ulinzi Stars late in the second half.

He aggravated the injury in the subsequent match away to Homeboyz in the Ingo Derby and the scans conducted later confirmed the worst.

The club’s assistant coach Tom Juma disclosed that the season was over for Esilaba but expressed confidence with his understudies in filling in the void.

He will be out for at least nine months. We would have wished to have him fit but injuries are part of the game. The club has around three central defenders who will in the meantime fill his shoes. We wish him a speedy recovery,” he said.

With Esilaba out, coach Patrick Aussems may bring Robert Mudenyu to the fold.

Mudenyu, who joined Ingwe in July 2019 from Sony Sugar was a strong pillar in the defense in his debut season at the club but fell down the pecking order after Cylde Senaji, a natural midfielder elbowed him out of the starting team.

Aussems will also look up to his defensive midfielder Collins Shichenje to partner with Robinson Kamura in the central defense.

The fast-rising versatile player has comfortably slotted in the defense in the event of a crisis in the department.
