Sportsmen begin feeling the effects of suspension of sporting activities

Mathare United attacking midfielder James Kinyanjui is appealing for a side hustle to stay afloat for the time sporting activities remain suspended.

The presidential decree to halt the flow of sporting activities disrupted the livelihoods of a host of sportsmen, precisely those who had not invested on a fall back plan and Kinyanjui is better placed to attest to it.

The lanky player revealed that his pockets have since dried leaving him to turn to menial jobs to meet basic needs.

"Truth be told, I am barely surviving. I was sure of income when the league was running but that financial tap has been closed.Ordinarily, players make an extra coin from the performance based allowances and training but at the moment, they have dried up. I am currently looking for a side hustle to put food on the table," he cried out.

Kinyanjui who joined the slum boys in December 2018 from the defunct Thika United in the meantime revealed that he had recovered from a rib injury which had seen him miss three matches.

The former national U23, Emerging Stars winger sat out during their three consecutive losses to Kakamega Homeboyz, Kariobangi Sharks and Posta Rangers.

Kinyanjui, a Passenga Boys alumni also noted that the suspension will play havoc to their chances of beating the drop.

"I had just recovered when the President made the announcement. Sadly, I have to stay indoors and train on my own. I was longing to return and help the team arrest the poor run. The break also disrupts our plan to survive relegation," he rued.

Mathare are placed second from bottom with nine points, one ahead of Zoo who are at the rock bottom of the log.
