K’Ogalo booked a return to Africa's premier club competition after winning the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title, having reclaimed the crown from Kenya Police FC.
With the CAFCL being Africa’s elite club competition, it will require top quality players for the club to make it at least to the group stage, a matter Onyango, who has experience in the competition, is well aware of.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the former Harambee Stars goalkeeper identified positions that will need revamping if the club is to put on a good show in the competition.
“The team will really need to reinforce the striking department. Since Felix (Oluoch) got injured, they did not have someone who you would be sure will bang goals,” he said.
Onyango, who captained the team to three league titles, also believes the team will have to make significant investments in the middle of the park.
“They may also need to make some adjustments in midfield. The team seemed to struggle whenever Alpha (Onyango) was out or off-colour,” he added.
The former Harambee Stars goalkeeping coach also took issue with the calibre of foreign players at the club, calling for better quality in the foreign quota.
“I also think that Gor Mahia needs top foreigners. Foreigners who can start matches. A foreigner should not sit on the bench; they should be on the pitch and provide what we cannot find locally, which sadly is not the case currently,” he added.
Some of the foreigners at K’Ogalo include Enock Morrison, Ebenezer Assifuah, Ebenezer Adukwaw, George Amonoo, Patrick Esombe and Jackson Dwang’.
According to Onyango, some of the foreign players do not deserve to play for the Green Army next season.
“You have to feel the presence of a foreigner in a team. They must also give more than what the locals do,” he concluded.
