Despite the growing popularity of his videos, including other viral trends such as the “nimejaa ngori” challenge, Okwenda remains grounded about the commercial potential of his online presence
Mara Sugar defender Joseph Okwenda has shed light on how he seamlessly balances the demands of professional football with a growing presence in digital content creation, following a series of viral moments that have captured fans online.
The experienced left-footed wing-back has recently become a familiar figure across social media platforms, particularly after his energetic “pawa” (power) gym video gained widespread traction on TikTok and across social media.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Okwenda once again caught the public’s attention on March 16, when he took part in the trending “Abobi” challenge shortly after Mara Sugar’s clash against Bandari FC, further cementing his status as a fan favorite beyond the pitch.
Speaking after Mara Sugar’s hard-fought 1-1 comeback draw against Nairobi United, the long-serving defender offered a candid insight into how he integrates content creation into his routine without compromising his professional responsibilities.
“When it comes to mind, I do the content creation bit. It’s usually a part-time thing, and mostly I do it when I am done with training, but mostly in the gym is when I do most of them,” Okwenda explained.
His remarks reflect a disciplined approach, ensuring that his off-field engagements complement rather than conflict with his primary role as a footballer.
Despite the growing popularity of his videos, including other viral trends such as the “nimejaa ngori” challenge, Okwenda remains grounded about the commercial potential of his online presence.
“Honestly, it hasn’t really crossed my mind yet to monetize my content and fully cross over into it, but it’s something I might consider at some point,” he admitted.
Acknowledging the finite nature of a football career, Okwenda hinted at a forward-thinking mindset regarding life beyond the game.
“A football career is short, and there’s always life after the game, but it’s definitely an option I could explore in the future,” he added.
