Olunga led the line as Kenya battled to a narrow win at the Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura, with substitute Ryan Ogam scoring the decisive goal in the 72nd minute.
Despite the positive result, the match proved far from enjoyable for the Stars, who struggled to impose their rhythm on the artificial turf while enduring a bruising encounter against a physically aggressive Burundi side.
Goalkeeper Brian Bwire was stretchered off just five minutes in after a nasty collision with Burundi striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana, who was shown a straight red card for the reckless challenge.
“It was a very difficult game to play, especially under the conditions, the pitch, and the temperatures,” Olunga said after the match.
“But we tried to contain Burundi as much as possible because we knew it was going to be a physical game.”
The Al-Arabi SC striker, who worked tirelessly up front with limited service, admitted frustration with Burundi’s rough approach but praised his teammates for maintaining composure.
“I believe that was their tactic. Yes, physicality is allowed in football, but not aggressive physicality,” he added.
“Every challenge, they complained to the referee; every loose ball, they fought for it. It was not a game to enjoy, but we are happy with the three points.”
Olunga lasted 81 minutes before being substituted for Marvin Nabwire as head coach Benni McCarthy sought to protect the slender lead.
Though chances were few, the captain’s leadership and work rate helped steady Kenya through a tense second half.
The result lifted Harambee Stars to third in Group F with 12 points from nine matches, offering a morale boost ahead of their final qualifier against African champions Ivory Coast on Tuesday.
