Rangers custodian hoping to draw inspiration from monthly award to muscle for the golden glove

After claiming the March footballer of the month award, Posta Rangers goalkeeper Kelvin Opiyo has revealed his dream of making it to the podium in the race to claim the Golden Glove in the end of season awards.

The league debutant piped Zoo Kericho centre back Alex Onchwari and Gor Mahia forward Wilson Silva to the award and consequently became the third shot stopper to claim it in the last six years.

The custodian clinched the award courtesy of keeping three clean sheets in as many matches played in the month.

Opiyo who joined the mailmen at the start of the season from National Super League APs Bomet said the recognition will inspire him to work harder once sporting activities resume in a bid to keep close tabs with the duo of JamesSaruni and Justin Ndikumana who lead in keeping flawless records.

Saruni who skippers four-time champions Ulinzi Stars has eight to his name while Ndikumana who is attached to Bandari has seven.

"The award comes as a reward for the hard work I had been putting in since joining Posta. It will go a long way in helping me to remain on top of my game even as I eye to make it to the podium at the end of the season," he said.

Meanwhile Rangers boss Stanley Okumbi who was also named as the March coach of the month hailed Opiyo for taking his chance and cementing his place in the starting team.

Opiyo had not made his debut since joining the club, and was handed his maiden start in the month after the duo of Bryne Omondi and Jairus Adira picked knocks only to prove he was equal to the task.

"We gave him a chance when the other two goalkeepers got injured and he punched above his weight. The recognition should send a message to other players that in football it's all about taking chances," said the former Harambee Stars coach.
