PSG lose their first potential trophy of the season after a shocking defeat
The winning march of Luis Enrique in France has come to an end. All right, it’s unlikely that anyone will dethrone the Saints from the top of Ligue 1, regardless of the fact that Lens currently have a minimal advantage. But the Spanish coach has lost his first trophy since taking over at the Parc des Princes — and in sensational fashion. The European champions will not be able to win the Coupe de France for a third consecutive time, as they were beaten tonight by their city rivals Paris, 0–1.
It was already noticeable in the recent league clash that Paris could match their wealthier and stronger city rivals. On that occasion, the Saints got away with it; this time they did not. PSG were dreadful in the first half, creating just one chance through Goncalo Ramos. They looked somewhat better after the break, and perhaps missed an opportunity to take the lead through Zaïre-Emery. Dembele also failed to make the most of his chance shortly afterward, and the punishment arrived in the 74th minute, when Ikone finished nicely after a pass from Kebbal, in a move that started in midfield after the hosts’ attack was intercepted.
PSG then began to take risks and push forward. However, Paris also deserved a stroke of luck — above all in the 87th minute when Zaïre-Emery hit the crossbar. The visitors were piling on the pressure around the goalkeeper, and it seemed as if PSG would force the ball into the net. But Paris’ defense held firm, and in the 96th minute they once again looked to the heavens. Everything suggested that Desire Doue’s shot would end up in the goal. It whistled past the post instead. A huge sensation, and the end of Luis Enrique’s perfect run.
