Playing in Ligue 1 with the stench of Ligue 2: Les Gones humbled at home

Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 27.01.24. | 00:59

Les Lyonnais only played in the second half, but Rennes were out of sight by then

Rennes piled more relegation worries on Olympique Lyonnais with a 3-2 win at their Groupama Arena on Friday night. The home team was in complete disarray in the first half and allowed in-form Rennes to score three goals without reply. An attempted comeback after the break made it a nervy final 15 minutes, but the damage was already done - Les Gones remain third-bottom.

Two goals from Martin Terrier and another from Desire Doue caused noisy unrest among the home ultras as the visitors shouted "ole" for every successful pass their team made.

The first 45 minutes were disastrous for Lyon as they entered the dressing room to a chorus of boos. Initially solid, they crumbled as Rennes found space, unleashed their first shot, and proved very dangerous in attack. Lyon's defence collapsed time after time.

Pierre Sage's team was deceptively dominant in attack, but their lack of goals, combined with a backline extremely low on confidence, put them in big trouble. However, they gave their fans hope after the break. Substitute defender Henrique Silva picked up a pass from Arsenal's loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles and reduced the deficit by beating veteran 'keeper Steve Mandanda.

Captain Alexandre Lacazette made it 2-3 with just over 10 minutes to go, but it was too late for OL to get a valuable point. Their current form smells of Ligue 2, but they seem to be going in the right direction. If they stop conceding goals so easily - they might have a chance of survival. But that is a huge "if".
