Second-tier dwarves make it to Europa League! Torreense stun Sporting in Portuguese cup miracle

Despite being absent from Portugal's top flight for more than 30 years, they produced one of football's great modern fairytales
For neutral football fans, few things compare to the beauty of a true underdog story. Those rare nights when logic disappears, money means nothing and a giant suddenly collapses under the weight of a fearless outsider. And when it happens in a cup final, the fairytale becomes immortal.
That is exactly the kind of story Portugal witnessed on Sunday night.

Torreense, a second-division side few expected to survive the early rounds, shocked Portuguese football by defeating defending champions Sporting CP 2-1 after extra time to lift the Portuguese Cup - and secure a historic place in next season’s Europa League league stage.
For a club that plays in a stadium with a capacity of barely 2,500 spectators, it is the greatest moment in its 109-year history.
Even more remarkably, Torreense have not played top-flight football in Portugal for more than three decades, their last appearance in the elite division coming back in the 1991/92 season. Until now, the greatest achievement in club history had been a seventh-place finish in the Portuguese championship.
Now they are heading to Europe.

The dream started almost immediately. Kevin Zohi stunned Sporting with an opening goal after just three minutes, silencing the favourites early and planting the first seeds of belief among Torreense supporters.
Sporting eventually responded through Luis Suarez early in the second half, and the Lisbon giants appeared to regain control of the match. But the deeper the game went, the more the pressure shifted onto the holders.
Then came the decisive moment.
Sporting left-back Maximiliano Araujo conceded a penalty in extra time and was shown a red card, leaving the favourites stunned and exposed. Up stepped Cape Verdean defender Stopira, who calmly converted from the spot to complete one of the greatest cup upsets Portuguese football has seen in decades.

The final whistle triggered scenes that looked almost unreal.
A second-tier club from Torres Vedras, a town roughly 25 miles north of Lisbon, had just won its first major trophy and qualified for European competition for the very first time.
And the story may not even be finished yet.
Torreense are still fighting for promotion to the Portuguese top flight, with their play-off against Casa Pia delicately balanced at 0-0 heading into the second leg later this week.
Meanwhile, Sporting’s season ends in bitter disappointment. After completing a domestic double last year, the Lisbon giants finished second in the league this season - and now close the campaign by losing the cup to a club whose stadium is smaller than many training grounds across Europe.
