Founded in 2014, Vihiga United enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks, earning promotion to the National Super League in 2017

Outgoing Vihiga United head coach Gilbert Selebwa has attributed the club's relegation from the National Super League to a series of setbacks, including a costly six-point deduction.

Vihiga's fate was sealed on Sunday after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Luanda Villa.

A missed penalty in the crucial fixture denied them a chance to secure survival, confirming their relegation.

According to Selebwa, the team's troubles began earlier in the season when they were docked six points after failing to honour a league match against Nairobi City Stars.

"The rain began beating us there. That penalty miss just confirmed what had already started," said Selebwa in an interview with Citizen Digital.

Despite the disappointment, the coach remains proud of his stint at the club.

Having taken charge late in the campaign, he guided the side to three wins, one draw and two defeats in six matches.

Selebwa believes the club still possesses quality players capable of competing at higher levels and is optimistic about a quick return to the National Super League if the right structures are put in place.

"Vihiga have good players who will be called by top-tier teams. If accorded the necessary support, including funding, the team can make a comeback to the NSL after next season," he noted.

Founded in 2014, Vihiga United enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks, earning promotion to the National Super League in 2017 before reaching the Kenyan Premier League a year later.

The club spent two seasons in the top flight before returning to the NSL in 2019 and has now suffered another relegation to Division One.

As for his next move, Selebwa says he will carefully evaluate his options before committing to a new challenge.

"I will not be hasty. I will pursue greener pastures where my welfare will be catered for properly," he said.
