Sharks goalkeeper Otieno lauds Jerry's impact on his career

Kariobangi Sharks custodian John Otieno has credited the club's goalkeepers' trainer and former Kenyan international Jerim Onyango for the role he has played in polishing his shot stopping skills.

Sharks acquired the services of the Onyango who is famously known as Jerry in February this year to plug in the gap left by the erstwhile trainer, Dick Francis in the goalkeeping department.

Otieno noted that working under Onyango, an ex-Gor Mahia player has seen him improve on his ability to handle the ball, distribute it better and bark out instructions to the defenders.

The glove man who has been consistent in between the sticks in recent weeks lauded the impact Jerry has had on his career for the few months he has been in charge saying the former national U-17 trainer has elongated his understanding of goalkeeping in leaps and bounds.

"I have passed through the hands of trainers who have shaped my career in a great way. However, the impact Jerry has had in the three months I have worked under him stands tall. His attention for detail and professionalism is quite something. He is the kind of a trainer who wants me and the rest of the goalkeepers to improve every week, " he said.

Otieno who joined Sharks before the season kicked off from Kisumu Hotstars has played a total of eight matches for the 2018 Cup winners and kept four cleansheets.

The 23-year old tasted top flight football with Kisumu All Stars in 2019 has been facing competition for playing time from Harambee Stars trialist Brandon Obiero and former national U20 goalkeeper Brian Olang'o.

He says the competition from the duo coupled by hard work and going the extra mile has unlocked the playing time he has been enjoying recently.

"I have two colleagues in the department who are equally talented and are always hungry for playing time. They have been supporting me whenever I am selected to play and I always return the favour. With the guidance from Jerry, I feel we will continue keeping cleansheets going forward, " he added.
