The 22-year-old central midfielder is currently on loan at League One side Stockport and, in a recent interview, spoke of how big Kenya is to his life.
“Massive. Massive. I am very in touch with my Kenyan side of the family, who are close to me, and it is something I am proud of. I am proud to be Kenyan,” said Onyango.
Onyango, whose father, Evans Onyango, is a former Rugby player, opened up on watching his uncles Allan Onyango, Duncan Onyango, and Patrick Onyango playing in Kenya.
“My dad played Rugby, and two of my uncles also played for the Rugby 7s Kenyan national team. I went to Glasgow when my uncle played in one of the World Cups, and it sticks in my mind and is a massive part of my life.”
The versatile midfielder, who can also play at center back and in defensive midfield, revealed his regular visits to the country to connect with family.
“I visit Kenya quite often in the summer. Maybe every other summer, I visit part of my family there, and so yeah, I am very close to that side of my family. My grandfather was born in Kisumu and then moved to Nairobi, and so I have got a lot of family in Nairobi and Kisumu,” he stated.
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy had been an admirer of Onyango and earlier in the month, spoke of his attempts to lure him to turn out for Kenya.
“Tyler was a player that we reached out to, and also reached out to Everton to get us some information - if the player will be willing to come and play for Kenya.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to speak to the player personally, but the team manager spoke to his parents, and they showed the desire for him to play for Kenya,” said McCarthy.
Onyango has already represented England at the U21 level, but with his eligibility to play for Kenya, McCarthy is confident of bringing him into the Harambee Stars fold.
“I definitely know that going forward and in the future, he is definitely a player that I would love to have in the national team,” he stated.
