The Kenyan defender did not feature in the crucial fixture due to injury as Wrexham were forced to settle for a painful 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough at the STōK Cae Ras on Saturday afternoon.

Heading into the final round of matches, the Welsh side occupied the last playoff slot on goal difference, fully aware that victory would have guaranteed them a chance to continue their fairytale rise toward the Premier League.

However, events elsewhere ultimately shattered those hopes.

Hull City, featuring another Kenyan prospect, Eliot Matazo, came from behind to defeat Norwich City 2-1, a result that saw them leapfrog Wrexham into sixth place and snatch the final playoff ticket by two points.

For Phil Parkinson’s men, it marked a cruel end to what had otherwise been a remarkable campaign for a club that was still playing in the National League barely three years ago.

Wrexham had entered the season as underdogs in their first campaign back in the second tier after 43 years away, yet they spent long stretches inside the playoff places and even arrived at the final day with destiny still firmly in their own hands.

Against Middlesbrough, the hosts endured a chaotic opening half filled with twists and momentum swings.

After falling behind early, Wrexham responded strongly and turned the match around to lead before David Strelec struck in the 43rd minute to level matters at 2-2 heading into the halftime break.

The second half became increasingly tense as both sides searched for a decisive goal that never arrived.

Ollie Rathbone came close shortly after the restart only to see his effort saved, while Josh Windass later blazed over as the pressure and nerves intensified around the stadium.

Wrexham’s misery was compounded by developments elsewhere after Hull’s winning goal, scored by Ollie McBurnie in the 67th minute, appeared to carry strong offside claims, though the goal eventually stood.

Despite the heartbreaking finale, the reaction from the home supporters after the final whistle reflected pride rather than anger.

Parkinson, his coaching staff and players received warm applause from fans appreciative of a season that delivered Wrexham’s highest-ever league finish.

Club director Shaun Harvey had already insisted before kickoff that the campaign would still be viewed as a success regardless of whether the Red Dragons reached the playoffs or not, and the foundations remain firmly in place for another push next season under the ownership of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Elsewhere, Hull City’s qualification for the playoffs marked one of the biggest surprises of the Championship season.

Many had tipped the Yorkshire side for a relegation battle at the start of the campaign, but manager Sergej Jakirovic transformed them into one of the league’s most dangerous counter-attacking teams.

Collins Sichenje

Meanwhile, Collins Sichenje and Charlton Athletic closed their season on a disappointing note after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Swansea City in their final match of the campaign.

Charlton had earlier secured their Championship survival with a 2-1 victory over Hull City in their final home fixture, ensuring there was little left to fight for heading into the last day.
