Julian Alvarez’s hat-trick gives Atletico a 3–2 victory over Rayo
A real disaster loomed over Diego Simeone’s squad, which was already trailing its biggest rivals in the standings. And when Alvaro Garcia put Rayo Vallecano ahead 2–1 in the 78th minute, it smelled like a complete collapse for Los Colchoneros, who would have sunk deep into the bottom half of the table with that defeat.
Then Julian Alvarez stepped up. He had already scored once in the first half, and in the last ten minutes of the match he struck twice more. The entire stadium erupted in applause, thanking him in awe. Atletico survived the small Madrid derby, but to be fair, it wasn’t anything brilliant, nor is Cholo’s team by chance “so far away” down the table.

The stats say Los Colchoneros deserved the win, yet they came dangerously close to a knockout blow. All they need now is someone to hand them a pillow alongside the blanket they already have, so they can just sleep through the rest of the season.
Still, this hard-fought victory will bring a breath of confidence ahead of the weekend and a much bigger city derby – against Real Madrid. Same place, Saturday.
🚨❤️🤍 Diego Simeone: “Julián Álvarez is the best player we have, we need to take care of him and keep him for many years at Atlético”.

Rayo came very close at one point. They scored a brilliant goal to make it 2–1, Garcia breaking the offside trap and strolling through to Atlético’s net. But less than two minutes later, Alvarez pounced on a rebound and buried it, reviving the red-and-whites before panic could take over. And then, in the 88th minute, he sealed it with a spectacular winner.
