There are at least two more coaches in Serie A who are on the 'hot seat'
Last week brought the first managerial changes in Serie A. Juventus were the first to act, sacking Igor Tudor and appointing Luciano Spalletti in his place. Poor results also cost Patrick Vieira his job at Genoa — his successor hasn’t yet been confirmed, but Daniele De Rossi is considered the frontrunner. The Grifone are at the rock bottom with three points in nine games and still no victories in Serie A this season. Former Genoa player Mario Balotelli took to Instagram Stories to first post that ‘Karma is a bitch’ and ‘God sees all and gives’. The Italian forward, who is still without a club had a big row with former Arsenal captain and didn‘t play before he left Genoa.
Other Italian clubs are expected to make further moves next weekend, just before the international break. The biggest crisis at the moment is in Fiorentina, where Stefano Pioli’s return has gone completely wrong. Pioli has managed to ruin everything he could so far, and he’s not showing much dignity either. The club offered him a mutual termination of contract with full payment for the current season, but he has so far refused. The experienced coach is the fifth-highest-paid manager in the league, protected by a contract worth three million euros net per year until the summer of 2028. Fiorentina are hesitant to sack him due to the financial implications — the compensation would cost around 13 million. The club had hoped Pioli would take responsibility and resign on his own, but that hasn’t happened. It’s likely he’ll be dismissed next weekend. As a temporary solution, the club is reportedly considering youth team coach Daniele Galoppa, though a more concrete — and cheaper — long-term option is expected to follow.
Ivan Jurić’s position at Atalanta is also under serious threat. The Bergamo side hasn’t won a Serie A match in over a month, and things aren’t going well in the Champions League either. Jurić was a surprising appointment last June after failed stints with Roma and Southampton, and it seems people in Lombardy are beginning to regret that decision. Names that were already mentioned in are back in circulation. Raffaele Palladino didn’t make it to the Juventus bench and will have to settle for a smaller challenge, while Thiago Motta remains under contract with the Old Lady but is currently unattached. Jurić faces two crucial matches this week — away at Marseille and then at home against Sassuolo. If Atalanta doesn’t show signs of improvement, it’s quite possible the club will use the international break to attempt a “shock therapy.” Among other coaches, Marco Baroni at Torino and Eusebio Di Francesco at Lecce have also been under significant pressure, but both have managed to improve their teams’ performances and results recently. They can be a bit more at ease now — though not entirely relaxed.
