Blazers played Lakers to a 1-1 draw in the other match played this morning
The Kenya Police hockey team has kicked off the Africa Club for Champions tournament on a positive note after shooting down Hippo of Zimbabwe at Sikh Union on Monday morning.
Police who finished second in the 2016 edition that was held in Nairobi floored Hippos courtesy of Samuel Oungo’s penalty stroke in the 47th minute.
The veteran defender who also doubles up as the JKUAT women’s team coach struck from the spot to ensure the Kenyan team got off to a flying start.
Reacting to the win, Police head coach Patrick Mugambi said he was satisfied with the way his charges expressed themselves on the pitch.
“All eyes were trained on us but I am glad we played well and won the game. There was an element of pressure considering that we played the opening game early in the morning something we are not used to. We can only get better in the next matches and win by a bigger margin,” he said.
With Police set to take on Tanzania’s Moshi Khalsa on Tuesday, Mugambi highlighted the need to polish the forward department as he seeks to win the duel in a convincing way.
“We could have won the opening game by a bigger margin had we converted the chances created. It’s an area I have to work on before we play the Tanzanian team,” he added.
Meanwhile, the clash pitting six-time champions Blazers against debutants Lakers ended in a 1-1 draw. The two Kenyan teams played at the City Park Stadium with Blazers getting their goal through Joan Anjao.
The Kisumu based Lakers replied through Cherotich Auslya.
Blazers head coach Jos Openda regretted that the blunt striking front cost the team the three points.
“We could have won the game had we taken our chances,” said the award winning tactician.
His Lakers counterpart Austin Tuju also noted a similar problem with his charges who were admitted to the tournament on Saturday alongside Western Jaguars after three Ugandan teams pulled out.
