
All set for Coronation Cup in Nakuru this weekend

A total of 95 players will this weekend take part in the 68th edition of the Coronation Cup set to tee off on Friday morning at the Nakuru Golf Club.
The tournament, sponsored by NCBA Bank, East Africa Breweries Limited and Moi University, will offer opportunity for a group of Kenya’s top golfers to battle for the most coveted Coronation Trophy and cash prizes.
Among the golfers expected to compete in the event include; Mike Karanga, John Lejirma, Dennis Maara - all part of Kenya’s national team - and Kenyan Junior golfer Elvis Muigua.
On the women’s side, Junior lady golfer Channelle Wangari will headline the team that will also include Esther Karuga and Sylvia Tanui.
Other notable contestants for the cup will be Senior Nakuru Club Captain Luther Kamau, Steve Kiaro, Carl Wambasi and Ebill Omollo.
Njoroge Kibugu - the defending champion - will however miss out on the event having turned professional. Njoroge, in 2022, was the only Kenyan to make the cut in the final round of the Magical Kenya Open and his brother - Mutahi - on Thursday, kick-started his professional stint outside Kenya in the Porsche European Open hosted at the Green Eagle Golf Courses, Hamburg, Germany.
The Coronation Cup will also act as a preparation event for the national team golfers when they take part in the Annual Region IV Golf Championship set for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 5-11 June 2023.
The tournament also qualifies for WAGR and KAGC ranking and offer a chance for the battle for the Club of the Year Trophy (COTY) to continue, with Kiambu Golf Club sending a delegation of 6 Kiambu Golf Club sending a delegation of 6 golfers who are committed to take the top points and extend their lead.
The new Kenya Golf Union boss Mr. Philip Ochola is ecstatic about the support received from the KAGC hosts, Players and Sponsors so far, and with the game of golf becoming a career choice in Kenya, he is happy to see the players succeed in the game they love and its continuous growth.
The 68th Coronation Cup comes at a time when the club has achieved a great milestone of 100 years.
Captain Mr. Mathew Maiyo expressed his contentment with the progress and evolvement the club has undergone to become what it is today, and is optimistic that the club will further its expansion to become a globally successful facility.
