He has called on sponsors to partner as he looks to add KNRC to the list

FIA Rally Star driver Jeremiah Wahome is calling on corporates to partner with him in his quest to take on the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) as well as the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC).

The 23-year old driver finished second in the just-concluded World Rally Championship where he took part in the WRC 3 category.

"We will be doing the rest of the ARC legs starting with Tanzania then head to Reanda and Zambia. Depending on logistics and our placing on the log, we may race in South Africa in November. If we can get sponsorship, we will also do a few of the remaining KNRC events," said Wahome.

The former Formula 3 drivers is headed to Estonia on Monday 11 July where he will get a chance to watch the WRC action.

On the first week of September, he alongside the other Safaricom-sponsored FIA rally star drivers, will be in Greece for the WRC leg, albeit as a spectator.

Wahome, while weighing in on the sport, says the local rallying scene will need more than just sponsorship for those already in the sport if it is to experience growth.

"Rallying is expensive and it is not easy to approach a team and try out their car. But for now, we have the kartings where drivers can start. A change in Kenya's motorsport culture is, however, needed to demystify that the sport is expensive.

In the UK, we had people running services where a driver can rent a car, get some coaching and compete in it and pay some money.

Programs like the FIA rally star are crucial for the growth of the sport but it targets drivers who are already in the sport. So the bigger question is how to get people who are not in the sport to get interested," Wahome advised.
