Former Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) women’s league champions Kenya Pipeline head to the new season, set to serve off on Thursday 31 October in Nyeri, under new tactician, Geoffrey Omondi, who has vowed to reclaim the side’s dominance locally and internationally.
Joining the oil merchants from men’s league side Trailblazers, Omondi, who has two weeks to prepare the team for league resumption, says his first order of business will be ensuring team chemistry as the side welcomes at least four new players while letting go of others.
“The only experience I have coaching women is in the junior category, especially at the school level. This calls for adjustments to the non-technical aspects of the team, but it is a surmountable challenge.
I join a squad that has been playing at the highest level and as such expect the transition for me to be seamless,” the tactician said.
Omondi believes Pipeline have a strong squad, one able to compete for the title, despite key exits in the lead-up to the new season. He is joining a technical bench that has Esther Jepkosgei, who held the head coach role since the exit of Paul Gitau in November 2023, Nicodemus Kiama, and Eric Ogola.
Additionally, Pipeline has made four acquisitions following the exit of skipper Rose Magoi who has called time on an illustrious career with the Oilers and opposite hitter Pamela Adhiambo.
Pipeline has brought in left attacker Miriam Musa and middle blocker Marian Sokoiyo from league champions KCB with the experienced pair of Violet Makuto and Noel Murambi also making a return.
In Magoi’s absence, the captaincy has been handed to Gladys Ekaru who is back from maternity leave while Celestine Nyongesa takes over from opposite hitter Adhiambo who is away in Finland for a professional stint with Club LP Viesti Akatemia. Setter Faith Imodia is also back in training from maternity leave.
“Tactically, I will seek to improve how Pipeline plays by addressing the speed of our game and getting the basics right,” the tactician concluded.
