KVF League: Prisons pile more pressure on holders KCB

While the title will be decided in the playoffs, both Prisons and Pipeline are early front runners as the bankers struggle

Kenya Commercial Bank's vaults will definitely need some strengthening as the Japheth Munala-coached side continues to struggle against the top sides in the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) women's league.

Last season's losing finalists Prisons Kenya are the latest to defeat the defending champions, subjecting them to yet another 3-2 loss, following a similar show against former champions Kenya Pipeline on Friday.

The loss for Munala's charges raises questions as to whether they could recover in time to defend their crown, a concern that the tactician seemed to sweep under the carpet, maintaining that they have several fresh talents set to be unleashed soon who will change the trajectory of their season.

Powered by veterans Lydia Maiyo and Blacksides Agala, Josp Barasa's wardresses recovered from a 25-15 start to begin their comeback with a 25-16 second set, reminding everyone of their title ambitions.

The bankers recovered to bag the third set 25-20 before the see-saw affair continued in the fourth set, Prisons winning 25-11 to send the match to an intense decider set that had the jailors prevailing 15-13 for victory.

This was a slight improvement for the bankers if their clash in the Nyeri tournament a fortnight ago is anything to go by. Albeit not in a league match, Munala's charges lost by straight sets.

"We are restructuring and this being the second leg of the season means we still have some things to work on as the league progresses. We will make amends and come back stronger for the next leg as we work our way to the top," Munala said.

Meanwhile Kenya Pipeline, out to reclaim the title they lost to the bankers last season, completed a perfect weekend, maintaining their unbeaten run with a 3-1 thrashing of Kenya Defence Force (KDF).

The Geoffrey Omondi-coached oil merchants had a less than favourable start, dropping a set to the military side in a 25-23 outcome. They, however, pulled themselves back with a stunning 25-03, a service clinic as they made sure to disorient the soldiers for 25-14 and 25-16 to continue their unbeaten run.

Sunday's action was not short of five-set thrillers as Post Bank had to dig deep to see off a stubborn Nairobi Prisons and secure two vital points in a (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-11).
