KCB Rugby continued their imperious start to the season after thrashing Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 45-3 in a one-sided Thika Road derby played on Saturday, 24 January, at the Blad Bin.
The highly anticipated clash had attracted a packed crowd, with the famous derby generating plenty of hype, but the Bankers quickly turned it into a ruthless display, picking up their sixth consecutive win of the campaign.
The match kicked off 25 minutes late due to the absence of a neck brace in the ambulance, but once action got underway, KCB wasted no time asserting dominance. Bob Muhati thought he had opened the scoring early on, only for the try to be chalked off due to an infringement in the build-up.
KCB knocked on the door again moments later, with Andycolle Omollo stopped just short by a resilient Blad defence
The students briefly found relief by pinning the visitors in their half and capitalising on a KCB infringement, Enock Oduor slotting in a penalty to hand Blak Blad a 3-0 lead.
That moment proved short-lived.
After sustained pressure, KCB finally broke through in the 20th minute when winger Mike Wekesa finished off a sweeping move, although the conversion sailed wide.
The Bankers soon doubled their advantage following a handling error by Blad, with Festus Shiasi racing clear from a scrum to score, Brian Wahinya adding the extras.
KCB kept piling on the pressure, Wahinya crossing over for a try of his own before converting to stretch the lead further.
Although Blad managed to hold up Sheldon Kahi over the line, the reprieve was brief as William Opaka cut through the defence with ease to score.
Just before the break, slick passing released Omollo, whose brilliant handoff set up Meja Mulongo for another try, Wahinya converting to send the Bankers into the half-time break firmly in control.
The second half was delayed to start, and Blak Blad returned with renewed energy, showing far more aggression and determination.
Their defensive effort improved significantly, limiting KCB to just one try in the second stanza.
Despite camping in KCB’s 22 on several occasions, the students struggled to convert pressure into points.
Blad opted for a kick at goal following a KCB infringement, but the attempt rattled the posts and bounced away.
KCB eventually had the final say in the dying minutes when Kahi crossed over, with the conversion sailing through to seal a commanding 45-3 victory.
