The Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy returns to Nairobi for a fourth time this April, Kenya Rugby Union has confirmed.

The tournament, which serves as the Africa U20 Championship will be played from 22nd to 30th April at the Nyayo National Stadium.

It will bring together eight of Africa’s leading U20 sides who will battle it out for the overall title and a ticket to this year’s World Rugby Junior Trophy which will also take place in Nairobi in July this year.

Leading the charge in Nairobi will be defending champions Zimbabwe, last year’s beaten finalists Namibia, hosts Kenya and Madagascar.

Other teams that will be in Nairobi include Uganda, Zambia, Tunisia and the Ivory Coast.

This will be the fourth consecutive year Kenya is hosting the continental tournament after holding it in 2019, 2021 and 2022. The tournament was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Having lifted the trophy in 2019 and 2021, Kenya will be looking to rediscover their mojo in the 2023 edition as they finished third in last year’s championship.

Kenya will then host the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023 for the second time from 15-30 July, having previous staged the tournament in 2009.

It will be the third time the tournament has been played in Africa with Zimbabwe having acted as hosts in 2016.

Eight teams will battle over four match days at the Nyayo National Stadium with the eventual winner being promoted the U20 Championship in 2024. This will be Kenya’s third appearance at the tournament, having featured in 2009 and 2019.

The World Rugby U20 Trophy 2023 participating teams are: Scotland (relegated from the U20 Championship in 2019), Kenya (hosts), Hong Kong (Asia), Samoa (Oceania), Spain (Europe), Uruguay (South America) and two teams still to qualify through regional competition from North America and Africa.

The Barthes Cup will be played on a knockout basis with over three match days.
