Shujaa came into the 9-12th place playoffs on the back of losing all their pool games against Argentina, Australia and Samoa
Kenya Sevens finally secured their maiden victory of the Paris 2024 Olympics following a hard fought 14-19 extra time victory over Uruguay.
Shujaa came into the 9-12th place playoffs on the back of losing all their pool games against Argentina, Australia and Samoa.
The torrid statistic saw them extend their eight year search for an Olympic pool game victory after also losing all their pool games in the 2016 and 2020 editions.
Kenya's restart Achilles heel came to the fore right after kick off with a number of missed tackles allowing Juan Manuel to touch down as he went on to convert his own try.
Shujaa huffed and puffed for the remainder of the first half, putting Uruguay on the back foot without really threatening as handling errors cost them.
Kevin Wambua had some stern words for his charges at the break which was evident from the electric start that saw them execute a perfect line up.
John Okoth twisted and turned in his own 22 meter line before turning on the afterburners to touch down with Anthony Omondi adding the extras.
With wind in their sails, Kenya wasted no time before adding a second with Samuel Asati slotting a try between the sticks after some heavy collisions from George Ooro as Omondi converted for the full score.
A sin bin was shown to John Okoth after the hooter with Uruguay capitalising on the man advantage to level the scores courtesy of an Amaya Baltazar try and Lijtenstein Guillermo's conversion.
The game went into extra time where a golden point would settle the highly charged match.
After a botched Uruguay kick, Kenya made the South Americans pay with the speed demon Patrick Odongo finally landing his first try of the Olympics to seal victory for Kenya.
