Kevin Wambua's charges had to break sweat for the win, rallying from a try down and had to grapple with numerical disadvantage in the first half
“Welcome back Shujaa. We missed you!”
These were the words of the commentator after Shujaa thrashed Germany 33-15 in the HSBC 7s promotion qualifier playoff staged in Madrid, Spain.
The result, guaranteed the Kenyans a direct slot in the HSBC World Rugby 7s series, a place they called home for a long time until last year.
Enjoying backing from the hundreds of Kenyans who showed up, Shujaa came, saw, and eventually conquered.
However, they had to do it the hard way as the Germans breached the backline and scored first although the conversion wasn't successful.
Skipper Vincent Onyala restored parity for Kenya after racing clear before landing over the line.
The match got brutally physical, and Kenya was reduced to six men after Chrissant Ojwang’s direct head contact with an opponent.

The Germans made the numerical advantage count and they went over with their second try through Niklas Kach.
The conversion flew way off the target much to the relief of the Kenyans who sang their lungs out in either halves.
Ojwang came back from the naughty chair less than two minutes to the end of the opening half and his impact was immediately felt.
Felix Okoth set him up for a try and he did not hesitate to send the crowd to cheers. The conversion attempt went wide.
In the final minutes of the opening half, Kenya won the maul, and a series of passes saw the ball land on Okoth who raced clear to add more points on the scoreboard.
The Kenyans came in breathing fire in the final half to score more points that further, weakened their opponents.
Onyala secured the lineout and Okoth was sharp enough to catch a lapse in the Germans' defence to go over with another try.
Germany responded with a five-pointer, but the Kenyans had already done the damage.
George Ooro, and Kevin Wekesa scored the final points for Shujaa to see the full-time scores at 33-15.
The journey to this point has not been a walk in the park. They dominated the Challenger Series with a gold medal in Dubai, a hard-fought bronze in Montevideo, and battling fifth in Germany.
Kevin Wambua's charges have registered three wins in this HSBC 7s playoff.
They started their campaign with a 19-12 victory over Samoa before suffering a narrow 10-5 loss to Spain.
The team ended it's pool matches with a 36-7 victory over Chile to set up the mouth-watering fixture against Germany.
