The two athletes brought back three gold medals from the 2024 Paris Olympics

Triple Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon and double Olympic gold medalist Beatrice Chebet have been ranked first and second respectively in the track and field world rankings as of Thursday 24 September.

The duo has achieved remarkable feats this year, earning them the well-deserved recognition.

Kipyegon’s run

The middle-distance track queen recently took the crown at the Athlos New York City women-only race, crossing the finish line in an impressive 4:04.79.

In addition to the title, Kipyegon walked away with a prize of Ksh7.7 million, rounding off an extraordinary season that saw her cement her dominance on the global athletics stage.

She started her season with an injury setback that saw her miss the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen and the Prefontaine Classic.

After shaking off the injury, Kipyegon graced the Paris Olympics qualifiers in June, where she qualified for both the 1500m and 5000m categories.

Kipyegon warmed up for the Olympics at the Paris Diamond League where she set a new record by clocking a time of 3:49:04, eclipsing her previous record by 0.07 seconds.

At the Olympics, she won a historic third 1500m title and took home silver in the 5000m event.

Following that, she graced the Rome Diamond League, where she brushed aside Australia’s Jessica Hull to sprint home for a 3:52.89 finish.

Her fine form continued during the Brussels Diamond League where she won her fifth trophy after clocking 3:54:75 to set a new meeting record.

Chebet’s run

Chebet, a two-time World Athletics Cross Country champion, has been in exceptional form, winning two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, setting a meet record at the Brussels Diamond League, and becoming the first woman in history to run under 29 minutes in the 10,000m.

She went on to break the 10,000m world record in Eugene, where she qualified for her first Olympics. After that performance, she set a personal goal: not just to compete but to target double gold in the long-distance events.

That goal was realized at the Paris Olympics, where she made history as the first Kenyan woman to win two gold medals at a single Olympic Games. She secured victories in both the 5000m (14:28.56) and 10,000m (30:43.25) events, solidifying her status as one of the greatest.

Other athletes on the list include Femke Bol (third), Julien Alfred (fourth), and Sifan Hassan (fifth).
