Widely regarded as one of the greatest middle-distance runners in history, Kipyegon has built her legacy around the 1500m, where she has dominated the global stage. In recent years, she has been embracing longer distances.

Kipyegon heads into 2026 carrying the confidence of an impressive 2025 season that saw her secure a fifth world title in the 1500m while also pursuing a bold sub-four-minute mile attempt in collaboration with Nike.

Opening her season in the 5000m, she explained that the move is part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen her endurance and test herself outside her comfort zone.

“I wanted to challenge myself early in the season and build strength. The 5000m is a great distance for that, and Shanghai is always a fantastic place to compete. I like coming to China, and the timing fits perfectly into my program,” she said.

The 31-year-old admitted that the longer race demands a different approach compared to her trademark 1500m events.

“The 5000m pushes me differently. It’s about patience, rhythm, and knowing when to make your move. I enjoy that challenge. My goal is to run a strong race, test my fitness, and start the season on a positive note,” she continued.

Kipyegon further noted that she remains motivated by the increasingly competitive women’s field, insisting she still has more to achieve despite her decorated career.

“I want to keep improving, stay consistent, and give my best in every race. Last year showed me that I can continue to push my limits, that I enjoy challenges outside my comfort zone.

And I need to continue improving, as we are currently racing with such a strong group of girls in every race. I have still lots to prove, so I’m excited for what’s ahead,” she averred.

Kipyegon will be targeting a record sixth Diamond League title this season alongside the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships set for September.
