Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has opened up on the coaching methods that will define his post-retirement career.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton midfielder retired from professional football in April and has since shifted his focus to coaching.
He is currently pursuing his UEFA A Coaching License after earning his UEFA B License in May 2025 while still an active player.
As part of his development, Wanyama has been working with a team of unattached players and a select group drawn from different clubs during the off-season, using the sessions to sharpen his coaching methods and gain practical experience.
Speaking after the exhibition match between Friends of Kizza and Friends of Wanyama and Mariga, where he featured as both a coach and player, the 35-year-old revealed the style of football he wants his teams to play.
"My way of training as a coach is different. I believe in short and intense training sessions. They achieve the purpose while keeping the sessions enjoyable.
Coaching is dynamic, and my ideas may evolve with time, but I like my teams to play with short build-ups and expose the opponent's structure," he said.
The former Harambee Stars captain, who earned a reputation for his tireless displays in midfield during a career that also took him to Celtic and CF Montréal, believes physical fitness is the cornerstone of any successful side.
"You have to be fit. If you are not fit, it becomes very difficult to play. You can have all the talent in the world, but without fitness it is hard to perform. That is why I place a lot of emphasis on player fitness," he added.
Wanyama is also expected to put his coaching philosophy into practice at the Wanyama Football Academy, which is currently under construction.
The academy is expected to play a key role in nurturing the next generation of Kenyan football talent.
