"Mum, it was all worth it": The heartbreaking story behind Fabian Ruiz's World Cup triumph

Fabian Ruiz's journey to becoming a FIFA World Cup winner did not begin under the bright lights of a packed stadium.

It began with a mother carrying the weight of an entire family on her shoulders.

Just two days after helping Spain lift the World Cup trophy, the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder shared a simple photograph with his mother, Chari Pena, accompanied by the caption that perfectly summed up a lifetime of sacrifice.

"Mum, it was all worth it."

Few captions have ever carried so much meaning.

Fabian was born in Los Palacios y Villafranca, a town of around 40,000 people near Seville. After his parents separated, Chari was left to raise three children on her own, taking on different jobs to make ends meet.

When Real Betis spotted Fabian's talent and brought him into their academy, they also offered his mother a permanent job as a cleaner at the club's training facilities. She accepted without hesitation.

Every morning she arrived at the stadium before 7 am, cleaning dressing rooms, corridors and the stands while her son chased his dream on the pitches nearby.

Years later, Ruiz admitted that those encounters in the hallways filled him with mixed emotions. As a teenager, he sometimes felt embarrassed to see his mother mopping the floors at the very place where he hoped to become a professional footballer.

That embarrassment eventually disappeared, but the pride never did.

While Fabian progressed through Betis' academy before earning moves to Napoli and later Paris Saint-Germain, Chari refused to stop pursuing her own ambitions. Alongside years of work at the club, she studied psychology and eventually graduated, proving that determination ran in the family.

After 15 years of service, she retired from Betis once she no longer needed the job. The reward for all those years of sacrifice arrived on Sunday.
