Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles has issued a stern warning to fellow American Trayvon Bromell after suffering a narrow defeat at the Paris Diamond League on Sunday, 28 June.

Lyles, who famously won Olympic gold in Paris in 2024 by the slimmest of margins, was edged out this time as Bromell produced a superb performance to claim victory in one of the most anticipated sprint races of the season.

Running from lane eight, Bromell exploded out of the blocks and maintained his advantage despite a late surge from Lyles, crossing the finish line in a season-best 9.91 seconds.

Lyles finished just one-hundredth of a second behind in 9.92, while Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs completed the podium in 9.96.

As Bromell crossed the line, he glanced towards Lyles, a gesture that appeared to irritate the reigning Olympic champion.

Lyles wasted little time responding on social media, posting a screenshot of the finish alongside a competitive warning aimed at his compatriot.

"Carefully there (Trayvon). The last person who did this to me didn't even make the podium next time we met,” he posted.

The American was referencing Jamaica's Oblique Seville, who famously stared him down after beating him at the 2024 Racers Grand Prix.

While Seville celebrated that victory, Lyles ultimately had the final say later that season by winning Olympic gold in the men's 100m in Paris, with Seville finishing a disappointing eighth in the Olympic final.

The exchange between Lyles and Bromell adds another chapter to an increasingly competitive era in men's sprinting.

Bromell's victory further underlines the depth of the event, with several athletes capable of winning on any given day.

Since Usain Bolt successfully defended his world title in 2015 after winning it in 2013, no sprinter has managed to retain the men's 100m world championship.

The unpredictability of the discipline was further highlighted when Seville rebounded from his Olympic disappointment to claim the 2025 world title.
