World 1,500m bronze medalist Reynold Cheruiyot has revealed how the presence of Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi elevated the intensity levels during the men’s 1,500m race at the Kip Keino Classic held on Friday, 24 April at the Nyayo Stadium.

Wanyonyi stunned a strong field to claim victory in a personal best time of 3:34.11, showcasing his versatility beyond the 800m. Cheruiyot crossed the line second in 3:34.73, while Munguti Kyumbe completed an all-Kenyan podium after clocking 3:36.21.
Speaking after the race, Cheruiyot admitted that Wanyonyi’s inclusion in the field changed the dynamics of the contest and forced every athlete to remain alert throughout.
“The race was really intense, but also very exciting to be part of. I’m grateful to God that I was able to come through and finish second, especially considering the level of pressure in that field,” Cheruiyot said.
“Having Wanyonyi in the race definitely raised the stakes for all of us. He is naturally an 800m runner, so you know he brings a lot of strength, speed, and aggression, particularly in the closing stages,” he continued.
The Bomet County native explained that Wanyonyi’s trademark finishing speed created tension within the pack and demanded constant concentration from the rest of the field.
“That alone created a lot of tension throughout the race because everyone had to stay alert and respond to any sudden moves. It pushed me to dig deeper, and even though it was tough, I’m thankful for how it turned out,” he added.
Despite settling for second place, Cheruiyot viewed the race as an important building block ahead of a packed international schedule.
The Kenyan middle-distance star will next shift focus to the African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana before competing at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday, 16 May.

“Now my focus shifts to the next race on May 16 at the Shanghai Diamond League. I’m going back to training to correct a few things and build on this performance,” Cheruiyot noted.
“I believe everything will fall into place as long as I stay consistent and disciplined. This is a very important season for me, with major competitions like the Commonwealth Games and the World Ultimate Championships coming up,” he said.
The former world under-20 champion expressed confidence in his preparations and believes he is on the right path heading into the major championships later in the season.
“My goal is to be at my very best when it matters most, and I’m confident that with the right preparation, I will be ready to compete at the highest level,” he said.
Cheruiyot heads into the continental championships in strong form after securing qualification for Team Kenya with an impressive display at the trials held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
He dominated both rounds of competition, winning his semifinal in 3:39.64 before storming to victory in the final in 3:36.1.
