Lyles, who won gold in the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, defeated, among others, Tebogo, who had earlier endured disqualification from the 100 meters.
Speaking after clinching gold in the 200 meters, Lyles, who is known for his antics, encouraged Tebogo to showboat.
“Be yourself, man. I watched you when you won the 100 meters (in World Youth)...I see you want to showboat. Just do it. It is you.
Do the antics, put on the crown, own it. It is you. Do not be scared of what people say,” said Lyles, as posted on Facebook by sports journalist Fentou Tahiru.
The American urged the reigning 200-meter Olympic champion to explore that side of his personality, noting that people will always have a say anyway.
“If they think you are not humble, let them think so. You know who you are, be yourself. Do not worry about what people say.
There is always going to be something said about you; it comes with the job,” he added.
Lyles, who is never shy of engaging in on and off-track antics, has constantly provided talking points and is now looking forward to having the Botswanan athlete join him.
“I would love to see somebody else who knows he has the character, the charisma…He (Tebogo) has it, but so many times I see him giving the reserved version, and I feel he is holding back because of how other people are going to see him,” he stated.
While Tegobo suffered heartbreak in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters, the 22-year-old soothed his pain with a historical win in the 4x400 meters relay.
The triumph by Botswana, beating world powerhouse USA and South Africa, was the first time an African country won gold in the race.
